Tutorial: Use PowerBI to connect to Data Adapter
Use a PowerBI to connect and query your data
Overview
Follow this step-by-step tutorial to connect to the Data Adapter using PowerBI. The following configuration steps will also serve as a good reference for configuring other applications and tools (like Google Looker, Tableau and Qlik).
ODBC drivers required
PowerBI requires the AWS Athena ODBC Drivers to connect to Athena. You will need to download and configure these drivers manually.
Step 1: Retrieve your credentials
If you haven't already, follow Step 1 of the "Connect to Data Adapter" guide to create and or retrieve your credentials.
Step 2: Download PowerBI onto your Windows machine
- Download and install PowerBI (official download page)
- Microsoft Power BI desktop is designed to operate on Windows computers. To use the full range of Power BI’s features and services, users must have a valid Microsoft account, which provides access to the Power BI service and ensures secure and personalised usage.
- While that downloads, make sure that you have an ODBC driver set up that is connected to the Data Adapter.
Step 3: Log into Power BI and get Data
-
Log into PowerBI
-
Go to Get data in the menu bar at the top of the screen
-
Search ODBC in the Get Data window
-
Select the relevant data source – the dropdown will include the ODBC data source
-
Write a custom query to provide specific data (optional)
-
Press OK
Step 4: Login using your Data Adapter credentials
Step 5: Load data
-
If no custom query was provided, select the tables you want to load
-
If you provided a custom query, select the data returned by custom query
