DebiCheck mandates

A DebiCheck mandate is a confirmation that a debtor gives a bank regarding a debit order. This is usually done by text message, internet banking or a banking app.

What is DebiCheck?

DebiCheck is a specific type of debit order that mandates your one-time electronic confirmation at the beginning of your contract period. This confirmation allows a policyholder to verify the details of their debit order with their bank before it is processed to their account. It allows the policyholder more control over their debit orders, and decreases the risk of fraudulent debit orders being processed. DebiCheck has received endorsement from both the South African Reserve Bank and the Payment Association of South Africa.

How does Root manage DebiCheck debit orders?

A DebiCheck mandate instruction is generated whenever a DebiCheck payment method is assigned to a policy. The mandate instructions are batched and submitted to our service provider. A notification will be sent to the policyholder prompting them to accept or reject the mandate via a channel determined by the bank. We process the response from our service provider and update the mandate status on the policy.

When does Root send a DebiCheck mandate instruction?

We batch mandate instructions and send them to our service provider at 09:00 SAST, Monday to Friday.

What happens when a mandate is rejected?

If a mandate is rejected, Root will not attempt to collect any payments from the policyholder's account.

If you would like to default to an EFT payment method when the DebiCheck mandate is rejected you can contact the Root support team on [email protected] to update this for you in the broader billing config.

How can I get a report of all DebiCheck mandates?

You can export your DebiCheck mandate data from the Root Platform using our export tooling.

What happens if the mandate expires?

When Root submits a collection request against a mandate that has been suspended or cancelled, the collection request will be rejected and it will be marked as a failed payment.

The fallback method upon cancellation is determined by the billing configuration settings. If the fallback method is configured to EFT, collections will default to EFT. If no default payment method is set, no collections will be made on the debit order.

Whose name will appear on the mandate?

The mandate will display the name of the insurance provider.
